About this site

Welcome to v-wiki!

This website contains a collection of useful tips, tricks, opinions, war stories, and guides.

I started to collate the information from many years of IT Infrastructure experience, where I always had an impatience of needing key information quickly, without having to read through a 400 page “quick reference guide” that was written by a non-English speaker, just to find out simple deployment information to get the system up and running. The site then evolved into a way for me to share knowledge and opinions that I had learned along the way.

It is important that you read the disclaimer before taking advice from this site.

So, why is the site called v-wiki? It all comes from my nickname, which was “Wicky” – shortened from “Wickham”, and this has evolved to “wiki” (some might say because I am like a wiki of information :) )

About Christian Wickham

I have been working in the IT industry since 1992 – and during my career, I have done almost every type of role, but mostly in the infrastructure/cloud and security space. The only facet of IT that I have never done is software development or coding – except for the odd script, bit of HTML or PowerShell command.

During my career, I rapidly progressed into team leadership, then departmental management, and then into IT function management – I have been a leader and manager for 22 years. However, during this time, I kept a close connection with hands-on work, maintaining my skills and understanding of the technologies that my team members were working on.

Whilst as a leader, I have been a Program Manager, performed organisation change management, digital transformation and transitioned companies to the cloud. You can read more about my leadership style.

I was a consultant for over 9 years, and a part of that is that I needed to maintain my current skills. Whilst at VMware, I was able to get training and certification on almost all VMware products, and whilst at SMS / ASG I have also been able to broaden my training into other areas too. I try to get new certifications and training each year.
